![]() ![]() The children, Wednesday and Pugsley are even more iconic, being so sadistic and twisted it becomes funny. Being bald, squat, and having bulging eyes heavily lined with black, this character would look terrifying were it not for his goofy gigantic grin and naive personality making him the classical incompetent that lends everyone in trouble. Fester, Gomez’s brother, is also an uttermost absurd combination of gothic and buffoonery. ![]() Morticia looks especially frightening with her dramatic makeup, her piercing stare and her sharp cheekbones, and her demeanour always stays cool and collected, which would enhance her otherworldliness were it not for the fact that this temperament persists in the most ridiculous and intense situations, like when she lightly scolds her children for trying to guillotine Pubert, the moustached baby, or when she is giving birth to said baby. Indeed, their presence seems threatening, but, as soon as they speak, the gloomy and dark portrait disappears. Both always dressed in dark attires, their vampire-like appearance of perfection distinguishes them from any normal human in a way that their personalities would not. Gomez and Morticia, the parents, are an eccentric couple who do not seem to have a care in the world except to love each other and their family. Made up of five core members, the Addams Family is a colourful (or not) array of characters fighting for the prize of the most sinisterly caricatural. I cannot help but to recommend this masterpiece. What makes a movie with such dark themes and macabre characters so enjoyable and holiday-appropriate you might ask? It is the humour brought by the excessive use of gothic elements in so grotesque a fashion it becomes ridiculous. Oddly enough, Addams Family Values (1993), a movie following a family with a unique and twisted lifestyle, is my favourite Christmas movie and, every year, I can count on Ciné Cadeau to broadcast it during the holidays. ![]()
